Public Astronomy Night

June 26, 2026
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
America/New_York
Pupin Hall, 538 W. 120 St., New York, NY 10027 301

Join us on June 26 at 8:00pm (note the later time!) in Pupin 301 for a talk by astrophotographer Sean Walker and grad student Noor Aftab about mapping the sky.

Title: An All-Sky Glow-up: The Story of the MDW Hα Survey

Abstract: Explore the unique view of our Milky Way captured by the MDW hydrogen-alpha (Hα) Survey! Undertaken by citizen scientists to map the red glow of ionized hydrogen across the night sky, it is the first of its kind in resolution and cadence. Learn about MDW’s origins, the work of bringing a sky survey to fruition, and the exciting science that a view in Hα light makes possible: from the explosive remnants of dead stars, to hidden and interacting binaries.

We'll start the evening at 8:00pm with some astronomy trivia, followed by the talk and Q&A. From 9:10-10:00pm, we will be outside observing on campus (weather permitting).

If you do not have a CUID or would like to bring someone who doesn’t have one, please follow the instructions and register here: https://forms.gle/JLXqBPSe31r52c9F6 by June 24 midnight.
